well, the thing is (can’t believe we are revisiting this topic). people go into real estate for many reasons and are motivated differently. bored housewives who think it will be fun to get a license and sell their friends a house (boy are they in for a surprise!). they do real estate in between tennis games. or. people who are retired from one profession and looking to earn a little something to supplement their pension. or. people who only want to earn enough for a specific need (send the kids to camp or put in a new kitchen — once they reach their goal, they’re done). then, there are those who really want to treat it as a job and career.

I would expect those agents to soar right past those averages, as nothing encourages success more than a hunger for success.

I hate averages of anything, because they can be so misleading.

In my area, it doesn’t take much to do a volume of, say, 2- 4 million a year (that could easily be only 4-5 sales) because housing prices in the NYC area are so high.

An agent, however, in GA or ND, make have to sell 3 times that number of homes to earn as much, so much of this average stuff also depends on where you are located. (it also takes more to live in my area).

There is an (unnamed) office in my area with a roster of 146 agents. maybe 25 of them do any real business. the rest most likely aren’t even trying, yet they will be part of those NAR skewed averages simply because they are licensed.

Alan and Dunes did sum it up perfectly. rydixn — make sure this is the business for you. give it all you’ve got. be smart and work smart — watch. learn and treat it like a real job. not everyone, however, is cut out for this. college degree or no college degree.

Rebecca, I am curious — all of us have swings, highs and lows, in our business — great, good and not so good years, but why do you think yours has continued to drop so dramatically?

Gordon, you sure do like to work numbers, don’t you!
