There are Several Ways to Find Stock Warrants

One of the first questions Im asked by investors / traders interested in warrants is how do I find warrants to trade or invest in? Since Im asked this question so often, I finally decided to put together a list of ALL the warrants currently trading on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ National Market.

Below, Ill tell you exactly how to put that list together yourself. But, putting together the list along with the actual terms, like the strike price and the expiration date of the warrants, takes a lot of time and effort. If you cant invest the time, or find pouring through SEC documents overwhelming, Ive already done it for you.

The list is in the form of an Excel database and is fully searchable and sortable. It includes not only the warrants and their underlying common, but the warrant terms (e.g. one warrant plus $5 equals one common), the expiration date, and the exchange on which the warrant is traded as well. The database includes all NYSE and Nasdaq National Market warrants and you can find it here .

Or, if youre a DIYer, settle in for a great how to put together a comprehensive list of warrants read below, and get crackin.

Putting Together Your List of Warrants

There are many ways to find outstanding stock warrants. New stock warrants are listed on a regular basis, so if you want to be up-to-date on what warrants are trading you need to set up a system to capture the newest listings. Listings of stock warrants currently outstanding can be found on the websites of the various U.S. exchanges.

There is no universal format for a warrant listing. Often the warrant symbol will be the symbol of the underlying with a W attached to the end, such as ABCDW. Sometimes a WS is attached to the end of the underlying symbol. And yet other times a letter representing the class of warrant may be attached. So a Class A warrant may be listed as the underlying with an A on the end, or ABCDA.

Finding Stock Warrants Listed on Exchanges

Warrants that are currently listed for trading can be found on the websites of the various exchanges. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) breaks out a listing of warrants on a separate page making it relatively easy to find warrants listed there. Unfortunately, of all the exchanges, the NYSE lists the fewest warrants. (Note to the NYSE. it could be easier to find a listing of stocks on your website, which I would imagine is one of the main reasons the site is visited.)

Nasdaq does not provide the same breakdown that the NYSE does. In order to find warrants listed on Nasdaq you can go through the complete list of stocks and pick out the warrant issues. As of this writing there are approximately 2,700 listings on Nasdaq.

Finally, warrants can be found on the Over-the-Counter Bulletin Board (OTCBB). You can download a list of all OTCBB stocks here. OTCBB stocks often trade by appointment. In other words, these are usually very thinly traded stocks and stock warrants.

While these warrants can be very profitable, they can also be very volatile and most investors and traders tend to avoid this market. But, if you are going to find warrants trading at a discount this would likely be the place.

Find Newly Issued Warrants with Google Alerts

One of the best ways to track new stock warrant offerings is to set an alert in Google. Simply go to your Google page and select More. Then under Specialized Search click the Alerts link. This will bring up a form.

In the form enter the term warrant offering or stock warrants. If you only put in the word warrant youll get alerts filled with the latest criminal warrant news. This can be entertaining, but time consuming when you only want stock warrants. You can set the number of emails you wish to receive with your selected search word and how often you receive them.

Additional Listings of Warrants

All of the above ways to find stock warrants are free. You may also find stock warrants in the listings of paid subscription business papers such as The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) or Investors Business Daily (IBD). But if youre willing to put in the time and effort you can compose a fairly definitive list of warrants for free using the sites and tools listed above. Or, you can simply click here for the database weve already put together.
