Fund Ideas For Investing In Russian Stocks

The following are some exchange traded fund (ETF) ideas for investing in Russian stocks.

Direxion Daily Russia Bull 3X Shares (RUSL) is an exchange traded fund that is designed to track the daily investment results of the Market Vectors Russia Index at a three times (300%) rate of the index’s performance.  This means that if the Market Vectors Russia Index is up 1% on a given day, RUSL will be up approximately 3% on that same day, and vice versa, if the tracking index is down for the day.  The Market Vectors Russia Index that RUSL tracks at a rate of three times derives its value from publically traded companies that are domiciled and primarily listed on stock exchanges in Russia.  The index also includes non-Russia based companies that generate at least 50% of their revenues from business operations in Russia.

Direxion Daily Russia Bear 3x Shares (RUSS) is the opposite of RUSL.  It is designed to track the daily investment results of the Market Vectors Russia Index at a three times (300%) rate of the performance in an inverse manner.  If the Market Vectors Russia Index is up 1% on a given day, RUSL will be down approximately 3% on that same day, and vice versa, if the tracking index is down for the day.

Other exchange traded funds that focus on Russian stocks, include (these are not leveraged ETFs):

  • Market Vectors Russia ETF (RSX)
  • iShares MSCI Russia Capped Index Fund (ERUS)
  • Market Vectors Russia Small-Cap ETF (RSXJ)
  • SPDR S&P Russia ETF (RBL)
  • VelocityShares Russia Select DR ETF (RUDR)

If you would rather invest in Russian stocks using mutual funds, the following are some mutual fund ideas that include funds that primarily invest in Russian equities and debt securities.

Voya Russia FundClass A (LETRX) is a mutual fund that primarily invests in equity securities of Russian companies.  The fund invests at least 80% of its assets in Russian company stocks.  The other 20% of the fund’s assets are typically invested in debt securities issued by Russian companies.  The fund also invests in debt securities issued or guaranteed by the Russian government.

Two other Russian stock focused mutual funds include Voya Russia Class I (IIRFX) and Voya Russia W (IWRFX).
