Webinar series provides financial advisors opportunity to learn, discuss practical uses of options strategies in client portfolios.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) July 09, 2013

MoneyBlock, an online broker-dealer serving independent reps and advisors. and The Options Institute at the Chicago Board Options Exchange, the oldest and largest U.S. options exchange and the creator of listed options, today announced a webinar series aimed at educating financial advisors on options strategies that could offer flexibility in generating income, and managing risk and volatility. Each webinar provides financial advisors with one continuing-education credit.

“Despite possessing extensive investment knowledge, the average financial advisor does not employ options strategies as an active portfolio management tool,” said Steve Hoffman, CEO of MoneyBlock. “At these webinars, advisors can learn about various portfolio options strategies, as well as obtain an understanding for how to discuss these strategies with clients – an integral part of managing a practice.”

According to a 2011 study by the Options Industry Council. just 48 percent of financial advisors use options in client portfolios. Among advisors who do not use options, half do not feel comfortable in their knowledge of options, or may be limited by their firm to use options as an added income or risk management tool.

The three upcoming webinars focus on understanding volatility (Tuesday, July 16), portfolio protection (Tuesday, August 27) and diversifying a concentrated portfolio (Tuesday, September 24).

“For time-pressed financial advisors, learning how to incorporate options into client portfolios may seem like a daunting task,” said Deb Peters, Vice President at The Options Institute. “Our objective for the program is to break the strategies down into smaller, more manageable topics and, in the process, reduce subject overload.”

Specifically, the webinars will address the following:

  • Tuesday, July 16 – Understand Volatility to Improve Asset and Strategy Selection: With many investment professionals now considering volatility as the basis for a new balanced-funds approach, having a broad-based understanding of volatility may help advisors make better risk-defined asset and strategy selections for their clients. Included in the discussion are basic volatility concepts and how the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) may be used as an inflection point that reveals longer-term volatility trends. (Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. CT)
  • Tuesday, August 27 – Portfolio Protection Strategies in Volatile Markets: Put options may be a suitable way to protect one stock position. However, buying puts on several stocks can be somewhat cumbersome and expensive when more than one stock is involved. This webinar will discuss how to manage positions with index options – which ones? – can offer similar protection in a more cost-effective way. (Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. CT)
  • Tuesday, September 24 – How to Protect and Diversify Concentrated Positions: Managing a portfolio with a concentrated stock position can be challenging for both the advisor and the client. If the concentrated position has a low-cost basis, the client may hesitate to sell any shares. Alternative, buying protective puts on individual equities can be expensive, especially on stocks trading with a high volatility. This webinar will focus on strategies such as collars and FLEX options. (Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. CT)
