About the Downtown Ghost Tour – Wall Street Walks
The Downtown Ghost Tour will return next season.
In a place with as rich a history as the Financial District, there are bound to be a few ghosts. Wall Street Walks uses the history of the neighborhood as a launching point for a seasonal walking tour: the Wall Street Walks Downtown Ghost Tour. This tour, offered throughout the month of October, exposes participants to some of the spookiest places in the historic Wall Street area.
Designed to get people in the spirit of Halloween, this walking tour includes many sights such as the haunted cemetery at Trinity Church, the darkest back alleys of the Financial District and the oldest taverns where ghosts are rumored to still roam. In the backdrop of all of this festive fun is historic tales of the identities of these ghosts and why they appear on these streets.
History buffs will be entertained with stories about the legends of Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr and George Washington. Some of the ghosts introduced through this tour are from more recent points in history, such as the Stock Market Crash of 1929, after which finance workers were driven mad by their substantial losses.
This candlelit stroll will provide a whole new perspective on the canyons of the Financial District. You never know who you might encounter on the tour – a ghost could be anyone from Edward Hyde, the cross-dressing governor of the British Colony of New York, to Henry Hudson, the man who discovered New York but was left on the ice in Canada after his men declared mutiny. This spirited tour manages to be both spooky and informative.
This walking tour is a straight 90-minute tour, with no opportunities for purchasing food or using a bathroom. There are several street vendors in the neighborhood that sell cold drinks. The ghost tour is offered at 5:30pm and 7:30 pm; the earlier tour is more appropriate for young children.
