An equity research associate reviews a firm’s operating data and detects profitability measures such as profit margin (net income over sales revenue) and return on equity (net income over owners’ investment). She then recommends asset selection ideas to a client, a proprietary trader or a portfolio manager (a proprietary trader uses corporate funds to invest in securities). For example, a research associate specializing in the financial services industry may advise a trader to buy stocks of an insurance company that show a strong growth potential.

Salary

An equity research aide’s total compensation may include wages as well as cash and stock bonuses. Individual factors, such as employee seniority, length of service and academic credentials also may affect remuneration levels. The U.S. Department of Labor indicates that median wages of equity research associates were $83,590 in 2008, excluding bonuses, with the the lowest 10 percent earning less than $44,050 and the highest 10 percent earning more than $149,110. The same research shows that the average annual salary for economists employed by the federal government was $108,010 in 2009.

Career Development

A research job generally requires business acumen, sharp investment analysis skills and data evaluation expertise. Accordingly, an equity research associate’s chances of career growth depend on length of service, seniority, performance and staffing needs. Professional credentials and academic training also may be career boosters. An undergraduate research aide may seek an advanced degree, such as a master’s or doctorate, in economics, statistics or finance to be promoted faster. A competent equity research associate moves to a senior role after three to five years.
