While in Sao Paulo i I went to visit Brazils stock market BM&F Bovespa. where all of Brazils market trades take place. Through a guided tour we learned of the history of the market and its initiatives to make Brazil an economic world leader.
After a tour of the building, a high-tech 3D movie of the history of the stock market, and a 30 minute presentation of how the market worked, my first question waswhy am I. a sporadic visitor, getting so much free information about Brazils trading market?
Providing Support For Women In The Stock Market: Brazils Example
According to Ivana, a business developer at BM&F. this tour is available to anyone interested in learning more about Brazils stock market. This initiative began in 2002 when the capital market launched a campaign called BM&F Comes To You. Interestingly, after a year of social outreach and research, the stock market saw female interest was prevalent. Given this interest in 2003 the stock market created the BM&F Women in Action program which has since formed a channel of communication between women and the trading market.
Through forums of communication BM&F found that both women and the stock market have a common goal: a successful long term. They both understand that to make a better tomorrow, we have to focus on what we do today.
A Win Win Situation With The Stock Markets Support
Because of this common goal the stock market allied with women to create a program that would ensure success for both the women and the market. Today the Women in Action program provides classes of financial literacy ranging from personal and home finances to investments in the market. Ivana explained to us that through courses and events the program informs women about stock investments that will enable women to achieve long term goals like buying a house, sending kids to college, building an emergency fund, and retiring comfortably.
The benefits of these investments are shared mutually by the womens families and the stock markets expansion of publicly traded companies. An additional benefit is the strengthening the Brazilian economy. Its a win win for everyone!
To me it sounds like through the creation of the Women in Action initiative Brazils stock market has successfully tapped into an invaluable clientele that is invested in the future of her family, her money, and her country.
It makes me wonder, could this program be successfully implemented here in the United States, where many people feel so far removed from the Stock Market?
Do you think our Stock Market has a responsibility to educate and help us succeed financially?
