Real Estate Taxes are payable in two installments. Due dates are June 5 and December 5. Please note that no reminders will be mailed prior to due dates.
Please pay the county bill at the Bedford County Administration Building and the town bill at the Town of Bedford Municipal building. This will be a one time only occurrence as it is due to the reversion on July 1, 2013
Personal Property Tax bills are mailed the last week of October and are due December 5. All motor vehicles (including cars, trucks, motor homes, and motorcycles), campers, boats, trailers, and airplanes normally garaged or parked in the Town of Bedford are subject to tangible personal property tax.
Starting in 2014, Personal Property will be assessed by the county and separate bills will be issued by the County and the Town. More details on this to come.
Business Personal Property Tax bills are mailed the last week of October and are due December 5.
All business machinery, tools, furniture, fixtures and other equipment owned within town limits on January 1st and used in a trade or business is subject to personal property tax.
Machinery and Tools Tax = $1.30 per $100.
The Town of Bedford imposes a tax upon every sale of cigarettes within the Town. The tax must be paid by the seller or dealer through the purchase of cigarette stamps from the Treasurer’s office.
Effective as of July 1, 2009 the Town’s cigarette tax rate is $0.30 per pack of 20 cigarettes. Cigarette stamps are sold in rolls of 15,000 stamps @ $4500.00. The Town offers an 8% discount for a net cost of $4140.00 per roll.
All Utility bills for the Town of Bedford are collected in the Collection’s office. Payments of cash, check or money order may be paid in person, by mail, or the night box (located outside of the front door of the Town Municipal Building). Payments made in the night box after 8:00 AM will not be credited to your account until the next business day. Credit or debit cards cannot be processed in the Collections’s Office.
However, we do have an outside independent service (sanctioned by the State) called Official Payments. You can pay your Utility Bills by using their service, and they will send the payments along to us.
This service is not free. Official Payments will charge a fee of $4.95 for each utility transaction (maximum bill of $500). You can use Official Payments by visiting their website at www.officialpayments.com or you can call 800.272.9829. Our Jurisdiction code is 1071. Our Utility account numbers only have 13 digits; Official Payments will ask for 15 digits. Just add two zeros to the front of your account number.
They will give you a confirmation number. You’ll need to call the Collection’s Office at 540.587.6057 and give us the confirmation number. The payment will not go onto your account until the next business day.
Meal and Lodging Taxes are due and payable on or before the 20th day of the month following the month taxes are collected.
Renewal of business license should be done by the end of January. There is no longer a business license tax only an annual application fee of $30.
All dogs in the Town of Bedford must have a current dog license. Tags must be purchased by January 31 and are valid for one calendar year expiring December 31 of each year. A valid rabies vaccination certificate must be presented every year a dog license is purchased. Fees are $5 per dog for unsexed dogs and $10 per male or female (unaltered) dog.
