Though government-issued bonds generally offer less attractive rates than corporate bonds, the reduced risk of default and the steady stream of income is attractive to many investors.

Discount retailers are another attractive area for investors to consider, and conversely, luxury retailers often suffer during a recession. Stocks of companies that produce consumer goods often pay dividends, as well, making the investment even more attractive.
