Personal Requirements to Become a Real Estate Broker in CA:

What does it take to become a Real Estate Broker in California? To get your broker license, you must be 18 years of age or older and a legal US citizen. You do not have to be a resident of California, but you will have to pass a state written exam to get a broker or salesperson license. You will also need to submit your fingerprints directly to the Cal BRE. Out-of-state brokers will need a California business address as long as they are doing business in California and must file a Consent to Service of Process (RE 234) with the Bureau of Real Estate.

To obtain your broker’s license, you will a minimum of 2 years experience as a full-time salesperson in the past five years. If you have a 4-year degree from an accredited college, you may be exempt from this two-year salesperson experience requirement.

To get your broker’s license you need to take eight (8) state required courses that are completed at an educational school accredited by one of the following: the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, a real estate school approved by the CA Real Estate Commissioner or by another accepted educational institute recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. All courses must be completed before you take the state exam.
