Mutual funds may be classified by their principal investment such as a money market fund, fixed or bond income fund, stock or equity funds or alternative funds (Fund of Funds or Hedge Funds). Funds may also be categorized as passively or actively-managed; LOM’s Funds are actively managed to out perform their benchmark portfolios.

Mutual funds became popular in the 1980 but have been in existence since the 18th century. The first fund like structure was created in the Netherlands with the objective of investing in European bonds; Arguably also making it the first offshore focused mutual fund.

Since this time the structure of Mutual funds have changed but still share a common theme of investors pooling assets for investing by purchasing a unit in the Funds.
