Mutual funds became popular in the 1980 but have been in existence since the 18th century. The first fund like structure was created in the Netherlands with the objective of investing in European bonds; Arguably also making it the first offshore focused mutual fund.

Since this time the structure of Mutual funds have changed but still share a common theme of investors pooling assets for investing by purchasing a unit in the Funds.
