Why Gold ETF and ETN Product Selection Matters (NYSEARCA GLD NYSEARCA IAU NYSEARCA DUST NYSEARCA

Have you ever wondered how billionaires continue to get RICHER, while the rest of the world is struggling?

I study billionaires for a living. To be more specific, I study how these investors generate such huge and consistent profits in the stock markets — year-in and year-out.

The largest gold ETF products are the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEARCA:GLD) and the iShares Gold Trust (NYSEARCA:IAU). These ETFs hold over $75 billion in assets combined and the competition between them is harsh. Their performance of 1.13% to 1.25% respectively ensures that most gold ETF investors are in the green this year when it comes to gold ETFs.

In contrast a review of the two largest gold mining ETFs tells a different story. The Market Vectors Gold Mining ETF (NYSEARCA:GDX) and the Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (NYSEARCA:GDXJ) have the lion’s share of gold stock ETF  assets. Together they hold over $10 billion of investor assets. Gold stocks and the ETFs that track them have been on a slide over the last year. Year to date performance from GoldETFs.biz shows these two ETFs down 13% and 28% respectively. While some say that gold stocks are due for a comeback and will soon track gold prices more closely, many believe that gold stocks are on a permanent disconnect in their relationship to gold prices due to industry specific dynamics like rising costs and the attractiveness of various gold ETF products.

Clearly the first half of 2012 has been a volatile year for gold ETF and ETN products of all persuasions. It appears it remains important to “know what you own” when it comes to gold exchange- traded products.
