Shares of world-leading carbon fiber manufacturerZoltek (NASDAQ: ZOLT ) have been pushed to new highs after a frantic attempt by Quinpario Partners to acquire a large position in the company. Despite being turned away by management, the fund does make valid points about the companys general lack of progress given its global scope and potential. Investors in this business built around a game-changing material may be worrying whether shares are about to fall back to earth. In the following video, Fool.com contributor Maxx Chatsko gives at least one reason for investors to think that shares can hold their current levels or even trek higher.

          3. Zoltek (NASDAQ: ZOLT )

Zoltek was an interesting investment at the beginning of the year for futurist investors. The company is one of the largest manufacturers of carbon fiber in the world. In fact, its lightweight and high-strength carbon fiber is used almost exclusively in the largest wind turbine blades around the world and played a major role in Americas 20-fold improvement in breezy energy capacity since 2000. This material of the future has many other uses and potential uses as well, but Zoltek has never really gained the confidence of the market in any big way: Its market cap was hovering near $300 million at the start of the year.

In terms of growth, Asia is where the company is achieving its greatest success. Operating joint ventures in China, India and Japan, Aegons gross deposits in new markets grew 31% in fiscal 2013 to $19.8 billion. Its underlying earnings before tax have grown 28% over the last two fiscal years, with fee-based earnings representing a much bigger part of its business than in the past. Thats a good thing, because fee-based earnings dont have nearly the same bite if things go south than assets on your own balance sheet. Its operations outside of Europe are getting stronger, providing the diversification necessary to survive financial hiccups. As far as insurers go, AEG is one of the best cheap stocks worth owning.

One key question Norfolk Southern faces is whether coal will bounce back from its recent declines, as the companys proximity to the important coal-producing areas of the Appalachian region gives it a natural advantage over Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP ) and railroads without a similar road map in the eastern U.S. The future trend of coal hasnt been entirely clear lately, with coal volume falling 13% during the first quarter but bouncing back by 3% in the second quarter. Yet in the past several years, revenue from coal has dropped sharply, and it now accounts for only about a fifth of Norfolk Southerns overall revenue.

The winter of 2013/2014 was one most transportation companiesincluding railroadswould probably like to forget.

As the so-called polar vortex lashed the Midwest, Northeast and much of Canada, many railways were forced to shorten their train lengths and their crews exposure to the frigid temperatures. The weather also delayed numerous shipments, which weighed on some railways first quarter profits.

CSX Corp. (NYSE: CSX), for example, cited the brutal winter as the main reason why its first quarter earnings fell 13.9% from a year earlier. The company said the weather cost it $0.08 to $0.09 a share in higher expenses and lost revenue.

Polar Vortex Couldnt Keep Union Pacific Down

One railway that managed to prosper despite the wild winter was Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP), a recommendation of our Personal Finance newsletter.

Union Pacifics roots go all the way back to the Civil War, when President Lincoln approved the Pacific Rai lroad Act of 1862 to encourage expansion in non-Confederate territories. Since then, it has grown through mergers and acquisitions, including the Southern Pacific, Missouri Pacific and Western Pacific railroads.

Today, the company operates a 32,000-mile freight network in the western two-thirds of the country, where it spans 23 states.

Union Pacifics revenue is well-diversified across six different categories of freight: intermodal, or containers that can be loaded onto ships, trucks or trains (20% of 2013 revenue); coal (19%); industrial products (18%); agricultural (16%); chemicals, including oil from U.S. shale plays like the Bakken, Permian and Eagle Ford (17%); and automotive (10%).
