The role is based within our Product Control area – Barclays is looking for fully qualified ACCA or ACA candidates with strong financial control and experience in statutory accounts.
Private Equity Finance provides full end-to-end financial control and product control support to the various private equity investments within Barclays, including Barclays Natural Resource Investments (“BNRI”), Barclays Private Equity (“BPE”) and Barclays Ventures (“BV”).
This role is for a contractor to provide maternity cover within the Finance team that supports the BNRI business.
BNRI is a commodities-focussed private equity business, investing in global natural resources by identifying and partnering with specialist operational management teams with specific sector expertise and experience, primarily in upstream oil & gas, mining, and power, including renewables. BNRI typically commits US$50–100m to each investment, which is structured as a line of equity to a newly established portfolio company, whereby management teams identify potential asset and transaction opportunities. BNRI currently has c.$1.3bn committed across 21 portfolio investments.
Private Equity Finance is part of the Product Control function within Barclays and is a small team of 10.Private Equity Finance provides financial and product control support for the private equity businesses at each stage of the investment lifecycle, for example:
- Investment Performance Appraisal — accounting and valuation guidance in investment structuring; Portfolio Management — quarterly impairment and valuation reviews, portfolio analysis and provision of comprehensive management information packs for submission to the business and finance senior management; Financial Control — preparation of management, statutory and regulatory reporting; maintenance of a robust control environment; Investment Realisation — accounting advice on exit or restructuring, reporting of investment performance, review of distribution proceeds.
This is a temporary role to provide maternity cover within the the Private Equity Finance team.The successful candidate will be required to fulfil a number of key financial and product control deliverables, including:
- Production of a weekly P&L; Maintenance of investment schedules; Preparation of monthly SAP journals and reconciliation of the general ledger; Production of monthly management accounts for submission to Front Office and senior management; Preparation of monthly returns and compliance schedules; Preparation of deal P&L and balance sheets for submission to the front office; Day to day interaction with key Finance contacts (Tax, Regulatory Policy & Reporting, Treasury, Financial Reporting); Production of statutory accounts; Dealing with ad-hoc requests from Front Office and senior management; Semi-annual valuation substantiation.
Person specification
Essential Requirements:
- Qualified accountant with a strong grasp of IFRS, and financial control experience; Strong interpersonal skills and gravitas — good communicator, comfortable explaining issues to peers, management and front office; Excellent problem solving, time management and prioritisation skills; Ability to take ownership and responsibility of issues and see them through to resolution; Excellent attention to detail and focussed on accuracy of information; Understanding of consolidation and foreign exchange concepts, and their impact on legal entity structures; Knowledge of key finance IT systems (preferably SAP); Strong Microsoft Excel skills; Awareness of an effective internal control environment.
Preferred Requirements:
- Exposure to investment banking environment; Knowledge of private equity industry and fund structures; Understanding of the regulatory capital framework.
