Commodity Box Tables
Futures charts for crop commodities may look like large box, containing rows of smaller horizontal and vertical boxes. Posted prices may be an average of all the prices offered across the industry. Boxes on the chart include the starting price for the commodity, the high box representing the highest price offered during the reporting period, and the low box representing the lowest price for the commodity. Charts include a closing price, daily volume and price trends. You must determine if the commodities chart you are looking at is for a specific location or represents the overall market.
Reading E-mini Charts
E-mini trading charts look like a row of candlesticks across the screen. An E-mini trading chart displays trading trends over time. The scale across the bottom of the trading chart or screen displays the period between trades, and the scale on the vertical axis displays price. Green candles represent positive movement in the price of the commodity, and red candles represent negative trends. Additionally, this type of chart may represent the number of trades completed over each period, such as five minutes. Watch for price trends to determine when to buy and sell with the best chance of profitability.
Chart Interpretation
Futures trading software places triangles over data in a chart, enabling traders to focus on trends in the market. The line at the bottom of the triangle represents the support level, and the area above the top line of the triangle represents resistance line. When a downward trend in the data falls below the the bottom line, traders see an indication to sell the commodity. When the trending data moves above the top line, traders see an indication to purchase more of the commodity. You should practice reading futures charts before making large investments.
