Is Your Home Ripping You Off Yahoo7 Moneyhound

With energy bills on the rise and the average Australian household paying out almost $100 every week on fuel, you’d be forgiven to think that your home is ripping you off.
What’s your energy use costing you?
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Australian households spent an average of $99 a week on energy in 2012 – and a full $39 of that was on electricity and gas used at home.
The houses that used the largest amounts of energy were those located in extreme climates, meaning the biggest energy drain is caused by attempting to create a comfortable living environment. So what can you do to bring your bills back down? Have a look at three ways your home is pinching your pocket.
Rip-off 1: Check your windows and doors
Your windows and doors are your biggest enemies when it comes to keeping your home at a comfortable living temperature. Glass offers an easy way for heat to get in or out, making them a prime culprit for excess energy consumption all year round.
Double glazing is a great way to sort out your windows and glass-panelled doors. It reduces heat seepage and makes it easier for you to control your temperatures at home. If investing in double glazing is more than you can afford right now, consider window films or blinds, which can have great results for a much lower cost.
Rip-off 2: Get some insulation on the go
There’s no point ensuring your windows and doors are in top condition if you’ve not also thought about the amount of heat that can get in or out through your walls and roof. Installing insulation for your ceiling, floors and walls will stop heat from escaping in winter and provide a protective barrier in summer too.
Avoid overtaxing your air conditioner or hot water system – get some insulation on the go and know you’re not letting your hard-earned money escape through your walls.

Rip-off 3: Ensure your system is up to date
Today’s hot water systems are far more energy efficient than in the past and if your energy bills are sky high, it might be time to update to a more recent model. What’s more, you might even want to think about making the most of Australia’s plentiful sun by installing solar panels to contribute towards your energy costs. Take advantage of government buy-back incentives and reduce your reliance on your energy provider with the help of some simple and discreet solar panels.
Of course, an immediate solution to rising power bills is to switch energy providers so you get a better deal. Make sure you’re not paying more than you have to for your energy by comparing energy providers and see if your current provider is offering you the best rates.
