Investment Associate

The Opportunity

The Associate position offers the opportunity to work in support of one of the world’s most important universities.  The financial support of UC Berkeley’s endowment is essential to furthering the university’s commitment to access and excellence in higher education, a mission which imbues BEMCO’s culture.

The Associate will work closely with a seasoned investment team and in doing so be able to further develop key analytical, interpersonal and time management skills that tend to characterize good investors and effective professionals.  Much of the day-to-day work will support the sourcing, evaluating and monitoring of fund investments as well as the ongoing development of portfolio analytics.  The Associate will also be expected to handle ad hoc projects, primarily involving research and analysis on a wide variety of evolving topics.

The position is a two-year program with the potential for three years if mutually agreeable.  The desired start timing is likely to be May / June 2015 with some flexibility.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Monitoring of Fund Investments
  • Participate in manager meetings and calls with responsibility for notes and various analysis
  • Help manage the information and work flows around reporting and cash flows
  • Sourcing of New Fund Investments
    • Help screen and oversee outreach to new managers based on specific objectives and criteria
    • Assist in the rigorous analysis of historical manager returns
    • Participate in manager meetings with responsibility for notes, memos and various analysis
    • Portfolio Level Analysis – return measurement, attribution and exposures among others
    • Fund Level Analysis – benchmarking, sources of return and characterization of alpha

    • Ad Hoc Projects – capital markets data analysis and sector specific research among others
    • Qualifications

      • Bachelor’s degree with coursework relevant to finance and/or investing is required
      • Interest in portfolio theory and/or the endowment model of investing is required
      • Experience making direct investments and/or selecting investment managers is desirable
      • A strong understanding of capital markets and complex investment strategies is desirable
      • Advanced skills in Excel, Word and PowerPoint are required; knowledge of Bloomberg is helpful
      • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are required
      • Current participation in, or a desire to begin, the CFA program is desirable

      The Administrative Assistant will work across a broad range of clerical tasks and be the first contact many external parties have with BEMCO.  The Administrative Assistant will work with confidential information and must exhibit a high degree of trustworthiness.   The position requires an individual that is resourceful and can work autonomously, take initiative and demonstrate excellent follow through.

      • Coordinate, de-conflict, and prepare for on-site and off-site meetings.
      • Manage the firm’s files (hard copies and electronic files) and mail.
      • Process invoices and complete monthly expense reports.
      • Manage the office supply inventory, subscriptions, and service contracts.
      • Coordinate travel arrangements to include multi-stop international trips.
      • Process certain investment authorization activity.
      • Day-to-day management of various service provider relationships.
      • Greet office visitors, accept deliveries, and maintain an organized environment.
      • Support various HR and operational activities as needed.
      • Other duties as assigned.

      The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, with a professional demeanor, who has strong organizational and communication skills.  Minimum qualifications include a college degree, 2+ years of full-time work experience and demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office.
